カール・ホフマンは、大学院生、AI研究者として米国マサチューセッツ工科大学（MIT）に12年間在籍しました。MIT人工知能研究所からのスピンオフ、シンボリックス社に入社し、子会社の日本シンボリックスを共同創業。他にもフリーソフトウェア財団のビジネスディレクター、FSFジャパン共同創業者、Unicodeコンソーシアムの理事を務めました。政府機関、企業、ビッグデータスタートアップに多言語解析とデジタルフォレンジックを提供するため、Basis Technologyを共同創業しました。

Carl spent 12 years at MIT as graduate student and AI researcher. Joined Symbolics, a spinout of the MIT AI Lab, and co-founded Symbolics Japan. Business director of Free Software Foundation and co-founded FSF Japan. Director of Unicode Consortium. Co-founded Basis Technology to deliver multilingual analytics and digital forensics to governments, enterprises, and big data startups.
